The Emergence of Marriage as a Marker of Class

Program for Sunday, June 26, 2011
1:00 pm till 3:00 pm, at UMKC, Room 301, Haag Hall

June Carbone, Smith Professor of Law. UMKC Law School, Co-author of Red Families and Blue Families

College graduates who marry now have the lowest divorce rates since the 1960s. Their children are most likely to live in intact families and get lavish educations; upper class children in intact families have all three advantages — class, education and intact family. But class largely trumps education: children raised in the top (top 20%) who do not get a college degree are now more likely to end up in the top (20%) than a child raised in the bottom (20%) who do get a college degree.
